THE SECOND ANTAL DORÁTI INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION

The Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV in cooperation with Studiomusica International Artist Management, announces the second edition of “ANTAL DORÁTI INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION”

The competition aims to offer a real career opportunity to emerging orchestra conductors and is open to musicians of any nationality without age limits. The competition will be held in Budapest from November the 5th until November the 12th 2018. The candidates will be selected through the examination of videos and CVs from February the 28th 2017 until May the 31st 2018.

REGULATION

1. The competition is structured in two main phases, ELIMINATORY phase that starts February the 28th 2017 and ends on May the 31st 2018. The eliminatory phase will be performed by the examination of videos and CVs; the FIRST ROUND and the following phases will take place from November the 5th until November the 12th 2018 in Budapest, with the presence of The Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV.

2. Conductors from any nationality can compete, without any age limit, (with exception of the winners of the previous edition.

COMPETITION STRUCTURE

3. ELIMINATORY PHASE
3.1 Starting date for sending applications: February the 28th 2017. Deadline for sending the applications: May the 31st 2018;

3.2 In order to register the competitors have to fill the on-line application form on the website. To the candidates it is requested to send links to videos of two contrasting character pieces

4. VIDEO DETAILS
4.1 The Videos aim to illustrate to the jury the candidate’s skills and technique and will be analysed together with the CV’s in order to have the most accurate opinion on candidate’s abilities;

4.2 Candidate’s have to link TWO videos of a rehearsal or a concert where two contrasting character pieces (for example one Allegro and one Adagio) from any historical period performed;

4.3 Two contrasting movements of the same piece are allowed;

Videos must have the following features:

4.4 Each video has to be from 3 to 15 minutes;

4.5 Each video can be part of a longer one but must not edited; only change of frame is allowed as long as at least 3 minutes of the frame is filmed with frontal view

4.6 Videos must be played in streaming mode (videos don’t have to be downloaded);

4.7 Videos can be private or public as long as they can be seen by the entire jury without any restrictions.

4.8 Candidates must send one link for each video;

4.9 No specific streaming platform is required, any of the most common are permitted (for example Youtube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Youku etc.) however the video should be played by an ordinary computer running a Windows or a Mac system.

5. CANDIDATES ADMITTED TO THE FIRST ROUND

5.1 The admitted candidates will be informed by email within July the 31th 2018 and the admitted candidates’ names will also be published on the website.

5.2 Only a maximum of 60 candidates are admitted to the first round.

5.3 The first round and the following phases will be held in Budapest from November the 5th to November the 12th at the following locations:
– Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV’s rehearsals room, Múzeum utca 11, Budapest
– Budapest Music Center, Fondazione Eötvös, Mátyás utca 8, Budapest
– Vigado Concert Hall, Vigadó tér 2, Budapest

6. FIRST ROUND – STRING ORCHESTRA
Monday the 5th, Tuesday the 6th, Wednesday the 7th November 2018

6.1 Only a maximum of 60 candidates are admitted to participate to the first round. The names of the candidates admitted to the next phase will be published before the end of the day (by midnight);

6.2 First round repertoire
-P. I. Tchaikovsky: Serenade for strings in C major op .48
-I. Stravinsky: Concerto in D for strings, I Movement
-W.A. Mozart: “In quali eccessi o numi” from Don Giovanni (only recitativo)
-W.A. Mozart: “Giunse alfin il momento” from Le nozze di Figaro (only recitativo)
-W.A. Mozart: “Crudele non mi dir” from Don Giovanni (only recitativo)

6.3 Each candidate will have a maximum of 20 minutes to perform;

7. SECOND ROUND – SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Thursday the 8th November 2018

7.1 Only a maximum of 20 candidates will be admitted to the second round;

7.2 Second round repertoire
– B. Bartók: “Intermezzo interrotto” from the Concerto for orchestra
– C. Debussy, Prélude à l’aprés midi d’un faune

7.3 Each candidate will have a maximum of 20 minutes to perform. The names of the candidates admitted to the next phase will be published before the end of the day (by midnight);

SEMIFINAL PREPARATION – Peter Eötvös meeting
Friday the 9th November 2018

8.1 Each candidate admitted to the semi-final will have a 45 minutes meeting with M° Peter Eötvös who is not part of the jury but serving as a mentor for the conductors, preparing them for the next round during private sessions in cooperation with the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation at Budapest Music Center.

SEMIFINAL – SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND SOLO VIOLIN
Saturday the 10th November 2018

9.1 Only a maximum of 10 candidates can be admitted to the semi-final;

9.2 The semi-final will be open to the public;

9.3 Candidates that didn’t pass the previous phases will have free access to attend the semi-final as public;

9.4 Repertoire of the semifinal
-E. Elgar: Enigma Varitations, Nymrod (IX)
-E. Elgar: Enigman Variations, Finale (XIV)
-J. Sibelius: Concert for violin and orchestra op. 47 , I and II Movement
-F. Mendelssohn: Concert for violin and orchestra in E minor op. 68, II Movement
-P. I. Tchaikovsky: Concert for violin and orchestra in D major op. 35, II Movement

9.5 Each candidate will have a maximum of 30 minutes to perform. The names of the candidates admitted to the next phase will be published before the end of the day (by midnight);

FINAL PREPARATION – Second meeting with Peter Eötvös
Sunday the 11th November 2018

10.1 Each candidate admitted to the final will have a 45 minutes meeting with M° Peter Eötvös who is not part of the jury but serving as a mentor for the conductors, preparing them for the final during private sessions in cooperation with the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation at Budapest Music Center.

11. FINAL – SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND SOLO VIOLIN
Monday the 12th November 2018

11.1 Only a maximum of 3 candidates are admitted to the final, to each candidate will be assigned a group and will have 60 minutes to rehearse for the final where the candidate will perform all the pieces from his group.

11.2 The Final (both rehearsal and concert) will be open to the public.

11.3 Candidates that didn’t pass the previous phases will have free access to attend the final as public.

11.4 Repertoire of the Final

Group A
– Debussy: La mer I (De l’aube à midi sur la mer)
– Tchaikovsky: Violin concerto II mov.
– Author to be decided: new piece (more or less 3 minutes)

Group B
-Bartok, Concerto for Orchestra I (Introduction: Andante non troppo)
-Sibelius: Violin concerto II mov.
– Author to be decided: new piece (more or less 3 minutes)

Group C
-F. Liszt: Mephysto Waltz n° 1
-Mendelssohn: Violin concerto II mov.
– Author to be decided: new piece (more or less 3 minutes)

Important: the score of the new pieces will be provided to the candidates admitted to the first round within September the 30th 2018;

11.5 The final concert is part of the competition, the candidate will be judged according to his conducting both of the rehearsal and the concert;

11.6 The winner will be announced to the audience after the final concert;

11.7 The pieces will be draw the night before the day of the concert and the candidates will be expected to know every piece from the repertoire;

12. PRIZES

First place: € 2.500,00
– 1 concert during 2018/2019 season at Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV (Hungary);
– 1 concert during 2018/2019 season at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova (Italy);
– 1 concert during 2018/2019 season at Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava (Slovakia);
– 1 concert during 2018/2019 season at National Theatre “St. Petersburg Music Hall” in St. Petersburg (Russia);
– 1 concert during 2018/2019 season of Extremadura Symphony Orchestra (Spain);
– 1 concert by Studiomusica International Artists Agency
– Contract proposal for one year’s representation by Studiomusica International Artists Agency
– Official Diploma

Second place: € 1.500,00
– 1 concert in Bartók Plus Opera Festival in Miscolc (Hungary)
– 1 concert during 2018/2019 season with The Moscow Symphony Orchestra “Russian Philharmonic”;
– Official Diploma;

Third place: € 1.000,00
– Official Diploma;

Special prize:
The Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation announces a special prize for best conductor in the contemporary repertoire which means free participation in one of the Foundation’s workshop for conductors in 2019.

12.4 The semi-finalists will receive a certificate to attest their classification to the second edition Antal Doratis Competition. The candidates that pass the eliminatory phase will receive a Participation Certificate;

12.5 The semi-final and the final will be open to the public and there will be the attendance of agents from international agencies;

14. APPLICATION

15. APPLICATION FEE

15.1 Application fee for the eliminatory phase is €120,00 to be paid to the following account (attention: the expenses are to be charged to the payer):

The Registration fee is not refundable for any reason except for the cancellation of the competition.

15.2 Candidates admitted to the first round will be required to pay the participation fee of €380,00 that has to be paid within September the 30th 2018.
The payment has to be made by using the same method of step 15.1

16. COPYRIGHT
The competition is a media event that will be recorded and broadcasted by television and radio.
Submitting their application the competitors authorize the organization to the use of their image either through photographs and audio / video that can be broadcasted via radio, television and other media (internet, etc.).
Submitting their application candidates also authorize the organization to use their name and image in printed publications related to the competition.
The organization expects that candidates are available for interviews, photo shoots, and any other activity designed to make the competition interesting for the media.
For any legal dispute the competent forum is Genoa’s.
