THE THIRD ANTAL DORÁTI INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION

Classics Management and Overture Non Profit kft., in cooperation with Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV, BRAAVI Group and Artes Italia, with the support of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academy of Music Ferenc Liszt, announces the third edition of “ANTAL DORÁTI INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION”.

The competition aims to offer a real career opportunity to emerging orchestra conductors and is open to musicians of any nationality without age limits. The competition will be held in Budapest from September the 4th until September the 11th 2021. The candidates will be selected through the examination of videos and CVs from March the 1st 2021 until July the 12th 2021.

REGULATION
1. The competition is structured in two main phases, ELIMINATORY phase that starts March the 1st 2021 and ends on July the 12th 2021. The eliminatory phase will be performed by the examination of videos and CVs; the FIRST ROUND and the following phases will take place from September the 4th until September the 11th 2021 in Budapest, with the presence of The Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV.
2. Conductors from any nationality can compete, without any age limit, (with exception of the winners of the previous editions.

COMPETITION’S STRUCTURE

3. ELIMINATORY PHASE
3.1 In order to register the competitors have to send their application exclusively through email following the indication on the “application” page of this website;
3.2 To the candidates it is requested to send links to videos of two contrasting character pieces;
3.3 Deadline for sending the applications: July the 12th 2021;

4. VIDEO DETAILS
4.1 The Videos aim to illustrate to the jury the candidate’s skills and technique and will be analyzed together with the CV’s in order to have the most accurate opinion on candidate’s abilities;
4.2 Each candidate must send links to TWO videos (rehearsal or concert are admitted) where two contrasting character pieces (for example one Allegro and one Adagio) from any historical period are performed;
4.3 Two contrasting movements or parts of the same piece are allowed;
Videos must have the following features:
4.4 At least half of the video has to be filmed with frontal view;
4.5 Each video must be longer than 5 minutes;
4.8 Each video can be part of a longer one but must be not edited;
4.7 Videos must be played in streaming mode (videos don’t have to be downloaded);
4.8 Videos can be private or public as long as they can be seen by the entire jury without any restrictions (no need for the jury to register, no advertising before the video starts);
4.9 Candidates must send one link for each video;

5. CANDIDATES ADMITTED AND VENUES
5.1 The admitted candidates will be informed by email within July the 26nd 2021 and the admitted candidates’ names will also be published on the website;
5.2 The competition will be held in the following venues:
– Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV’s rehearsals hall: Stefania utca n.61, Budapest (First and Second Round)
– Italian Cultural Institute, Budapest: Bródy Sándor u. 8, Budapest (Semifinal)
– Liszt Hall, Ferenc Liszt Academy: Liszt Ferenc tér 8, Budapest (Final)
The Semifinal and the Final will be performed in front of the audience and broadcasted on the page of the competition;

6. FIRST ROUND
Saturday the 4th, Sunday the 5th, Monday the 6th September 2021
6.1 Maximum 60 candidates are admitted to the first round. The names of the candidates admitted to the next phase will be published before the end of the day (by midnight);
6.2 Repertoire:
-P. I. Tchaikovsky: Serenade for strings in C major op .48
-F. Mendelssohn: Symphony for Strings n°10 in B minor
-B. Bartók Divertimento for strings, 1st and 3rd movement
6.3 Each candidate will have a maximum of 15 minutes to perform;

7. SECOND ROUND
Tuesday, September the 7th and Wednesday, September the 8th 2021
7.1 Maximum 20 candidates are admitted to the second round;
7.2 Repertoire
– L. van Beethoven Symphony n° 5 in C minor mov. 1; Allegro con brio
– L. van Beethoven: Egmont Ouverture
7.3 Each candidate will have a maximum of 20 minutes to perform. The names of the candidates admitted to the next phase will be published before the end of the day (by midnight);

8. SEMIFINAL
Thursday, September the 9th 2021
8.1 8 candidates are admitted to the semi-final;
8.2 The semi-final will be open to the public;
8.3 Candidates that didn’t pass the previous phases will have free access to attend the semi-final as part of the audience;
8.4 Repertoire
– Dvorak Symphony n° 9 “from the New World” mov. 1; Adagio – Allegro molto
– Dvorak Symphony n° 9 “from the New World” mov. 4; Allegro con fuoco
8.5 Each candidate will have a maximum of 30 minutes to perform. The names of the candidates admitted to the Final will be published before the end of the day (by midnight);

9. Meeting with the media partners
Friday, September the 10th 2021
9.1 The finalists will be interviewed by the media partners of the competition (the meeting will last about 2 hours; the exact timetable will be defined during the week of the competition);

10. FINAL
Saturday, September the 11th 2021
10.1 Only 2 candidates have access to the Final; to each candidate will be assigned a group and will have about 75 minutes to rehearse for the final where the candidate will perform the pieces in his group;
10.2 The Final (both rehearsal and concert) will be open to the public;
10.3 Candidates that didn’t pass the previous phases will have free access to attend the final as part of the audience;
10.4 Repertoire of the Final;

Finalist 1
– Antal Dorati: from Nocturne and Capriccio: Notturno: Andante (1926)
– Tchaikovski Symphony n.5: Mov. 1 Andante – Allegro con anima; Mov. 3 Allegro moderato.

Finalist 2
– Antal Dorati: from Nocturne and Capriccio: Notturno: Andante (1926)
– Tchaikovski Symphony n.6 Mov. 3 Allegro molto vivace Mov. 4 Finale. Adagio lamentoso.
Important: the score of the piece by Antal Doráti will be provided to the candidates admitted to the first round within July the 26th 2021;

10.5 The final concert is part of the competition; the candidate will be judged according to his conducting both of the rehearsal and the concert;
10.6 The winner will be announced to the audience after the final concert;
10.7 The pieces will be drawn the night before the day of the concert and the candidates are expected to know every piece from the repertoire;

Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV: a concert in 2021/2022 season;
Plock Symphony Orchestra: a concert in 2022/2023 season;
Armenian State Symphony Orchestra: a concert in 2022/2023 season;
Orchestre International de Genève: a 1 concert in 2021/2022 season;
– Official Diploma;

SECOND PRIZE
Silver plate €2500,00 worth
Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV: a concert in 2021/2022 season;
Plock Symphony Orchestra: a concert in 2022/2023 season;
– Official Diploma;

SILVER MEDAL OF THE “ANTAL DORÁTI INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION”
The 6 Semifinalists that will not have access to the Final will receive the € 1000,00 Silver Medal of the “Antal Doráti International Conducting Competition”
11.4 The semi-finalists will receive a certificate to attest their classification to the second edition Antal Dorati Competition. The candidates that pass the eliminatory phase will receive a Participation Certificate;
11.5 The semi-final and the final will be open to the public and there will be the attendance of agents from international agencies;

12. THE JURY
The jury is composed of:
John Axelrod, Principal Guest Conductor of the City of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra; Artistic Director of the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla;
Oleg Caetani, Prize Winner at RAI (Italian National Radio Television Orchestra) in Turin and Karajan Competition in Berlin;
Anna Duczmal Mroz, Conductor/Artistic Director of Amadeus Chamber Orchestra of Polish Radio;
György Lendvai, General Manager of MAV Symphony Orchestra;
Myron Michailidis, Generalmusikdirektor Philharmonisches Orchester Erfurt and Erfurt Opera;
Sergey Smbatyan, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra;

13. APPLICATION
To get registered you must send the following documents exclusively in electronic format:
• Filled and signed application form;
• Link to the videos;
• 1 picture;
• Receipt of the payment of the application fee;

Application forms and documentation for the eliminatory phase have to be sent by 24:00 UTC July the 12th 2021 sending an email to antaldoraticompetition@gmail.com

14. APPLICATION FEE
14.1 Application fee for the eliminatory phase is €120,00 to be paid to the following account (attention: the expenses are to be charged to the payer):

The Registration fee is not refundable for any reason except for the cancellation of the competition.

14.2 Candidates admitted to the first round will be required to pay the participation fee of €380,00 that has to be paid within August the 10th 2021.

The payment has to be made by using the same method of step 14.1

15. FINAL NOTICE
15.1 Submitting their application the competitors authorize the organization to the use of their image either through photographs and audio / video that can be broadcasted via radio, television and other media (internet, etc.);
15.2 Submitting their application candidates also authorize the organization to use their name and image in printed publications related to the competition; the organization expects that candidates are available for interviews, photo shoots, and any other activity designed to make the competition interesting for the media;
15.3 The application and participation fee will not be refunded for any reason, except for the cancellation of the competition; for any legal dispute the competent forum is Budapest’s.
